It's a 100th Birthday Party for Mary Poppins!
To celebrate 100 years since the events in Bowral NSW that gave birth to the character of Mary Poppins, the Southern Highlands Youth Arts Council (SHYAC) is holding a special "sing-a-long" screening of the fabulous 1964 Disney film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. This karoake style film print includes the words and we are encouraging locals and visitors to bring your voice along and join in the fun. If you get in the spirit and dress up in period style as a nanny, chimney sweep, bowler-hatted banker you could win some great prizes.
You can buy your tickets online now (via PayPal or VISA/MC) when you register OR at the Empire Cinema box office (cash only). Cost is only $10 (adults the same price as kids because for this event everyone is transported back to childhood again).
Proceeds are going toward a commemorative bronze statue of Mary Poppins that is planned for the park near the home of the author, PL Travers, a place she played during the time she lived in Bowral and created the essence of the Mary Poppins character.
The preferred sculpture design will be announced at the cinema screening so be the first to find out!
To coincide with the centenary, SHYAC will also be launching a new regional youth choir project at this community sing-a-long event. If you are interested, then come along to find out more as well as the audition process for our upcoming junior youth musical
